Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon, Newport’s third Welsh-medium primary school, opened its door to pupils in September 2011 to meet the increasing demand for Welsh medium education.

The school is named after Teyrnon Twf Gwliant (Teyrnon Great King, Roar of the Sea), a character from the Mabinogion, which is a collection of medieval Welsh stories. Teyrnon was lord of Gwent-is-Coed, and features in the story of Pwyll and Rhiannon.

Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon was established sharing a site with Maindee Primary School. The school opened with 16 children in a starter class for nursery and reception pupils. Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon moved to its permament site in September 2013 – Brynglas Primary School’s previous site.  Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed is situated on the site temporarily until August 2018, which is housed in a separate buildings. It has been a privilege to have such supportive parents and friends that have embraced the new school.
